Abstract: This chapter traces the invention of the computer in several countries during the interwar period and up to 1945, concentrating on events in Germany and comparing Zuse’s machines with those invented in the USA. In the second part, we look at Helmut Schreyer’s electronic prototype and some aspects of his life and work during the Second World War.
