In the early twe...This chapter shows fraternities have a long tradition of controlling the campus dating script by artificially manipulating sex ratios to create an even more pronounced hookup culture. In the early twentieth century, when men were the numeric majorities on college campuses, fraternity chapters created artificial male scarcity by prohibiting some of their members from attending their own parties. Today’s campus demographics combine with current NIC policy—which does not establish a minimum membership size of fraternity chapters—to do the same thing. The uneven size of many campus fraternity and sorority chapters means that every time a sorority engages socially with a fraternity at a sorority or fraternity mixer, formal, or event, there are upwards of three times the number of women at the event than men.Read More
