Abstract: This chapter discusses the rate of a chemical reaction in which the reactants are converted into products and are monitored by measuring the change of concentration of a reactant or product with time. It looks at the instantaneous rate, which refers to the rate of appearance of products and disappearance of reactants that changes during the course of the reaction. It also explains how to obtain the average rate of reaction by measuring how long it takes for one of the reactants to be completely converted into products. The chapter looks at the rate of reaction at any point during the reaction process, which is given by the gradient of the tangent to the curve. It includes the initial rates method for determining rate equations, which takes a series of reactions with different initial concentrations of a reactant.
