Title: Boundary-Spanning Knowledge Processes in Heterogeneous Collaborations
Abstract: This chapter surveys knowledge processes in group contexts involving collaboration between people who are more diverse and heterogeneous. It explains why boundary-spanning collaboration is so important and widely used, as well as the benefits that can be derived from this form of collaboration. The chapter then looks at the character of boundary-spanning knowledge processes, outlining how the lack of common knowledge and shared identity shape their dynamics. Next, Carlile's (2002, 2004) influential work is used to distinguish between the types of boundaries that can be involved in boundary-spanning. Finally, it considers the way that boundary-spanning knowledge processes can be facilitated and managed, such as through the use of boundary objects and the management of cross-boundary social relations via the activities of brokers and boundary-spanners.
