Title: Role of Nanotechnology in Latent Fingerprint Development
Abstract: Nanotechnology refers to the technology that deals with matter in nanoscale dimensions ranging from 1 to 100 nm. This technology is implemented at nanoscale and has vast applications in several fields of science. Nano Forensics is an emerging field of Forensic Science that uses nanoparticles or nanosensors and further aid in crime investigation. Nanotechnology has been employed in the development of latent fingerprints. Conventionally, fingerprint powders and various chemical techniques are being used to develop latent fingerprints, but they have several disadvantages like poor visibility, smudging, and failure in visualizing aged and contaminated prints. Application of nanoparticles for the development of these impressions overcomes all the disadvantages of the traditional methods being applied up to date. The nanoparticles that have significantly proven successful in the development of latent fingerprint from different types of surfaces are nanoparticles of gold, silver, zinc oxide, silicon oxide, aluminum oxide, carbon, quantum dots, and rare earth metals. Several modifications of these nanoparticles are also done for better results. The application of these nanoparticles in fingerprint development, various modifications, and their merits and demerits have been discussed in the chapter. The future aspects of nanotechnology in fingerprint development have also been discussed at the end of the chapter.
