Title: Synergistic effect of nanomaterials with organic and inorganic soil contaminants
Abstract: Agricultural soils contained a variety of organic and inorganic contaminants even before the era of nanotechnology. With the increasing accumulation of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) in agricultural soil, concerns have arisen with regard to the synergistic effect of ENMs and the coexisting environmental contaminants on their effect on plant growth and their accumulation in plant tissues. This chapter summarizes the current understanding on the synergistic effect of ENMs and different organic and inorganic soil contaminants on plant health, as well as their impact on the plant uptake and accumulation of cooccurring environmental contaminants. Depending on the properties of nanomaterials and coexisting environmental pollutants, ENMs may aggravate or alleviate the toxicity of cooccurring environmental pollutants. They could also alter the plant uptake and accumulation of environmental contaminants. Thus it is important to understand the interactions of copresent ENMs and environmental pollutants before nanotechnology is fully embraced in agriculture.
