Title: The Design Features of Locomotives with Hybrid Propulsion Systems
Abstract: This article reviews the possible usage of hybrid propulsion systems in rail transport, particularly in locomotives. The authors prove the potential benefits of hybrid propulsion in terms of fossil fuel saving and combating negative climate changes. They analyze the operating modes of locomotives to assess the possibility of using a traditional propulsion system with a smaller power output. The article describes the potential advantages of hybrid propulsion systems as well as the potential problems and limitations of their use. The authors suggest a flow chart for the hybrid locomotive operation and assess the prospects of using various energy storage units. They describe the operational algorithm and the operating modes of the propulsion system power storage units and auxiliary modules. The authors suggest fitting locomotives with capacitor storage units (supercapacitor banks) or electrochemical power storage units (electrochemical batteries). The calculation and design research was conducted based on the analysis of the operational modes of the TEM18DM locomotive, as well as the required propulsion system output for these modes. To facilitate the use of a hybrid system as an alternative to the standard diesel system of the TEM18DM locomotive, the article suggests using the following components: a lower-grade diesel generator and additional power sources, namely large-capacity batteries connected in parallel to the engine's main traction generator. The authors developed and provided a design layout for an upgraded locomotive with a hybrid propulsion system based on a standard locomotive. They described the workflow of the hybrid propulsion system and suggested an operational algorithm.
