Title: Pseudasphondylia ishigakiensis, a new gall midge species (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) from Japan developing in flower buds of Melicope triphylla (Rutaceae), with notes on its life history
Abstract: A gall midge species (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) associated with flower buds of Melicope triphylla (Lam.) Merr. (Rutaceae) was found on Ishigaki Island, southwestern Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. Morphological examination and molecular analysis indicated that it is an undescribed species of the genus Pseudasphondylia Monzen (Cecidomyiidae: Cecidomyiinae: Asphondyliini). The species is herein described as Pseudasphondylia ishigakiensis Elsayed sp. n. and notes on its life history are reported. In addition, a molecular phylogenetic analysis based on a fragment of COI mitochondrial gene comparing the new species with other known Pseudasphondylia in Japan was conducted to confirm the species distinctness.
