Abstract: Shigella is a bacteria known to cause a spectrum of acute gastrointestinal (GI) disease. Shigella dysenteriae can cause severe dysentery in humans. This provides potential for use as a bioterrorism weapon. It can be difficult to identify the specific bacteria causing illness because of its common presentation to many other diarrheal illnesses. This bacteria has high infectious potential and an ability to develop resistance to many antibiotics, which increases its threatening potential.
