Title: Gendering populism: the rise of right-wing populism and anti-gender politics in Brazil
Abstract: This chapter investigates the role of gender in Brazil’s populist moment, and how the rise of reactionary politics leads to backlash against and opposition to gender-related human rights. I start by considering the global factors that led to contemporary populism and how globalization has facilitated the emergence of populism in Brazil. I then examine the gendered elements embedded in populist ideas, performances, and strategies to argue that populism connects to hegemonic notions of gender. Focusing on the Brazilian context, I show that the reactionary politics of gender and sexuality are part of a broader counter-revolution against challenges in social hierarchies and rights expansion from the 1990s to the 2000s.
