Title: Fossil fuel reduction potential using renewables: The case of the Spanish electricity system
Abstract: This paper presents an analysis of the minimum renewable power requirements to reduce as far as possible the dependence of the electricity system on fossil fuels. The Spanish electricity system and two years of 10-min real generation data, discriminated by power technology, have been used. The potential for fossil energy reduction of photovoltaic energy is analysed, as well as its combination with wind power and the flexibility margin that would produce a coordinated generation of wind, solar and hydro technologies. The results show that a dramatic reduction of fossil fuel generation is possible with a moderate increment of renewable power and a coordinated operation of hydro power plants.
