Abstract: The most effective protection against the possibly catastrophic effects of the normal variability of human performance, and normal human limitations, is the use of Standardised Operating Procedures and the unfailing use of a Checklist. It enables the crew member to shed some of the workload, thereby leaving more capacity available to deal with other matters requiring his expertise. If properly used it provides an assurance of continuity and completeness when essential crew duties are interrupted by ATC, by cabin staff, or other outside responsibilities.
