Title: Studio Ghibli at the Art Museum: Exhibiting Animation as Art
Abstract: Does Studio Ghibli make art? This chapter looks at the art exhibitions that Studio Ghibli has curated and at the exhibitions held at its bespoke Ghibli Art Museum to examine the way the studio has moved into Japan’s wider art world throughout its existence. Doing so has taken Studio Ghibli’s films from commercial exhibitions at Japanese department stores, into a company museum and far beyond, into some of the world’s most high-profile museums. By attending to how Studio Ghibli translates its own, and other animators’, works for museum exhibition this chapter reveals how hard Ghibli has been working to inculcate and promote animation as an art form equivalent to any other kind of fine art.
