Title: Per un’antropologia dei monumenti: le sospensioni del giudizio e il patrimonio culturale.
Abstract: The war in Ukraine again shows us the power, far from theoretical, that monuments can have. In the city of Kherson, the symbolic statue of Lenin had been sawn into three pieces and removed at the time of decommunisation, but was repositioned immediately after the invasion, in front of the regional government building. This example shows how statues can be symbols of power capable of conveying political messages. Recently, we have seen how the Black Lives Matter popular participation movement has questioned the majority representation of our own present, lashing out at symbols deemed inappropriate and representative of a society still tied to colonialist thinking. It is also important to reflect on the monumentalism of different cultures, which can trigger mechanisms of resistance and reflect on the structural inequalities created by our recent past. Keywords: monuments, violence, statues, colonialism, suspension.
