The two canonical problems of far-field radial loading and far-field tension are considered in detail. For both cases, cylindrical coordinates are employed to develop the solutions. These two cases are illustrative of the general concept of stress concentration and stress concentration factor—a concept which is further discussed for an elliptical crack-like defect in a plate under far-field tension. The role of such stress concentration sites as places at which a crack can nucleate and cause fracture of the structure is emphasized.Read More
