Title: Sources of stem cells for regenerative purposes
Abstract: An important challenge in stem cell therapy is choosing the source of stem cells. Mesenchymal stem cells can be obtained from bone marrow, adipose tissue, or Wharton jelly. Hemopoietic stem cells can be obtained from bone marrow, peripheral blood, or cord blood. Endothelial progenitors are present in bone marrow, adipose tissue, and cord blood and tissue. Lastly, periodontal stem cells and tissue-specific stem cells are obtained from their corresponding tissues. Despite the common characteristics of each lineage, the stem cell source conveys some specificities in either surface antigens, proliferative state, or specific paracrine functions.
