Abstract: There are a variety of alternative spherical harmonic systems. For example, spherical harmonic systems can be formulated in quaternion representation (see, e.g., K. Gürlebeck, W. Sprösig (2015)). Spherical harmonics may be generated in the framework of Wigner symbols (see, e.g., A.R. Edmonds (1964), D.M. Brink, G.R. Satchler (1968)). They provide adequate help in coupling terms of spherical functions as they occur in fluid dynamic problems, such as the spherical Navier-Stokes equations (see, e.g., M.J. Fengler, W. Freeden (2005)). A presentation of spherical harmonics of both quaternionically and fluid dynamically reflected systems is given in the monograph W. Freeden, M. Gutting (2013), where entry points to the literature are available, too.
