Title: Nanocarriers‐Based Targeted Drug Delivery Systems: Small and Macromolecules
Abstract: Nanomedicine and nanocarriers have been a buzzword in pharmaceutical arena for over a decade with widespread applications in the field of prevention, diagnostics, imaging, treatment, and theranostics. Nanocarriers have been further improvised to possess targeting potential for their site-specific delivery in timely manner to ensure superior performance, safety, and patient compliance. It must be appreciated that commendable progress has been made in design, development, and optimization of various targeted nanocarriers over the years, and some have already made their way into market. Interestingly, in addition to being an excellent carrier of small-molecule cargos, these targeted nanocarriers hold exceptional potential for delivery of macromolecules. This chapter discusses rationale for development of targeted nanocarriers and further dives into various types of targeted nanocarriers based on their mechanism of targeting viz. passive targeting, active targeting, and stimuli sensitive targeting.
