Title: Asian Americans in the Novel of Late Capitalism
Abstract: Abstract This chapter highlights the function of Asian American and Asian transnational model minority characters in two novels from the late twentieth century to the early twenty-first, Samuel R. Delany’s The Mad Man (1994) and Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians (2013). In a late capitalist economy, Asian Americans who are intellectually and/or financially well resourced are defined by their excess and portrayed with prose that exaggerates these endowments to the level of hyperbole. The fictional worlds these characters inhabit may appear post-racial; however, these novels also show that model minority characters never completely escape their racialization or colonial subject status.
