Title: The two-sample t test and the importance of pooled variance
Abstract: The two-sample t test, like all t tests, combines the difference between our prediction and our outcome, sample size, and the amount of variation in our data into a single number that can be used to let us gauge the trustworthiness of those data. The mathematics are introduced. For a two-sample t test, variation is assessed with pooled variance, that is, pooled across the two samples. Pooled variance, also known as mean square error and its variations, plays a key role not only in two-sample t tests, but also in analysis of variance. Understanding pooled variance is essential to understanding null hypothesis testing.
