Abstract: Philosophical objections to null hypothesis testing are presented and addressed as follows: we want to know when we are wrong, not how often—true, but if we only test null hypotheses to determine direction, we can control the number of errors in the literature; setting α to 0.05 does not mean that 5% of all null-based decisions are errors—true, but if we only test nulls to determine direction, fewer than 2.5% of all null-based decisions will be errors; there are better ways to analyze and interpret data—there are different ways; rejecting the null hypothesis does not justify accepting a specific research hypotheses—true, but it does justify choosing a direction; our method cannot be used to determine direction—wrong.
