Abstract: Proteus spp. are opportunistic pathogens of human, causing gastroenteritis and nosocomial infections. The cell surface structures, enzymes, and secretory components contribute to Proteus virulence. Proteus spp. have special biochemical characteristics and a swarming phenomenon. These special characteristics can be used to identify and discriminate Proteus spp. Regarding treatment, Proteus spp. are inherently resistant to polycationic antibiotics. The combination of antibiotics achieves a maximum treatment efficacy.
