Abstract: Web search engines create web repositories, essentially caching the online content in the Web on their local computer systems. These repositories provide quick access to the copies of the pages in the Web, helping to speed up the indexing and search processes. A search engine, at all times, aims to minimize the potential differences between its local page repository and the Web due to the coverage and freshness requirements we mentioned in Chapter 1. This, however, is a very challenging task since the Web is in continuous and fast evolution: a large number of web pages are created and deleted every second, while the content of the existing pages are modified. Hence, the web repositories of search engines are in a constant race to catch up with the evolving Web.
