Title: Political elites, leadership, and the rise of populism
Abstract: The chapter deals with the role of established elites across the political spectrum in the process of spreading populism in post-communist counties from East-Central Europe. According to the author, populism is not as much a cause as it is a symptom of the crisis of democracy. Inefficiency and irresponsibility of traditional political parties and their lack of leadership strongly contributed to the popularity of populist messages. Poor institutional performance at both the national and European levels in dealing with crises gave strong impetus for populist political forces. The latter take advantage of decreasing confidence of political institutions which is evident in many Western democracies but is more profound in the new democracies.
