Abstract: Americans who study science and engineering in college are very likely to put their major to use in the job market, according to the National Science Foundation's National Survey of College Graduates conducted in 1993. More than 70% of all students who have an undergraduate science degree eventually work in a science‐related job; 28.6% work in the discipline they studied. Among those who earn advanced degrees, roughly 68% hold jobs in science and engineering, 59.3% in their field of study. Whether they end up in science or not, college graduates with science degrees earn more than their counterparts in other fields. Graduates of science programs take home 17.6% more pay than other bachelor's degree recipients, and 6.1% more than other graduates with advanced degrees.
