Title: Introduction: Journalists and Histories of Knowledge
Abstract: Since the beginnings of the modern newspaper industry, journalists, their work and their publications have been viewed with skepticism, even disdain. Journalism and journalists have been studied by various disciplines, including journalism history, which have researched topics such as the professionalization of journalism, the emergence of the mass press in the nineteenth century, and the popularization of scientific knowledge by journalists. The newspaper age consequently witnessed debates about the boundaries between journalists and academic scholars as creators and disseminators of knowledge. The "vanishing newspaper," "crisis of journalism," or even the "death of journalism" have become established tropes in the discourse, sometimes used to point to specific underlying issues of changes in authority and status in journalism. The chapter also presents an overview on the key concepts discussed in this book.
