Title: Law and Religion in the Liberal State. Edited by Md Jahid Hossain Bhuiyan and Darryn Jensen
Abstract: A capacious collection, Law and Religion in the Liberal State takes as its organizing framework the question of “the place of religion in a liberal polity” (p. 9) and the ways in which “liberal legal systems … accommodate religious beliefs, symbols, institutions and practices”—or don’t (p. 6). Even if one adopted a narrow and monolithic definition of liberalism or religion, or both of them, or focused on a particular country or region, that question could fill countless volumes. As the editors, Md Jahid Hossain Bhuiyan and Darryn Jensen, observe in their introduction, “Freedom of religion and separation of religious and civil authority are not monolithic ideas but have evolved along different paths in different national and religious communities on account of different historical conditions” (p. 6). Since the contributions here range over time as well as space, the result is something of a law-and-religion gallimaufry. As a book project, it could have done with some stricter boundaries.
