Title: Describing Statistical Models and Selecting Appropriate Tests
Abstract: This chapter is in effect a short set of exercises getting a reader to describe data sets and choose the relevant statistical tests. Assuming that he/she has all the necessary information about the study design, how the data were collected, and the hypothesis being tested, he/she must decide two things: which statistical model do the data best fit; and what he/she can infer about the populations from the sample data. The chapter contains brief descriptions of data sets or experiments and a question which illustrates the purpose for which the experiment was carried out. For each description, he/she can decide which statistical test or tests would be appropriate. The chapter explains how to describe statistical models, and presents the statistical flow chart to choose statistical tests appropriate for his/her model.
