Abstract: Gallstone disease is a common condition in western countries and is a significant cost to the community. Symptoms can vary from none to life-threatening infections and complications. The causes of the formation of gallstones are multifactorial and variable and their diagnosis may not always be straightforward. Treatment for symptomatic gallstones will usually include surgery but may require other modalities as well. Because of the frequency of gallstones, the efficient management of their complications and symptoms is a significant public health and community challenge.
