Abstract: Members of the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily, such as Nodal, act as inducers for the formation of vertebrate mesoderm. In particular, Nodal is needed for normal embryo development, and its signaling must be tightly controlled. Zhang et al. report that Dapper2 modulates Nodal signaling activity in zebrafish embryos: Loss of Dapper2 leads to upregulation of Nodal-responsive genes in early gastrula and, conversely, overexpression of Dapper2 yields downregulation of Nodal-responsive genes.
