Abstract: A previous article1 discussed the evolution of microprocessor architecture, from the earliest 4-bit processors, to the start of the 16-bit era, represented by the TMS9900 and 8086.New product details announced by Zilog and Motorola, as well as Intel, now allow a better assessment to be made of the 16-bit microprocessor field, and of the likely directions that 16-bit microcomputer systems will take. The purpose of this review is to acquaint the re ader with the developments, and show how the families of competing devices compare with each other.
