Abstract: The basal ganglia are built of the corpus striatum (the caudate nucleus and putamen), nucleus accumbens (ventral part of striatum), globus pallidus (external and internal segments), nucleus subthalamicus, and the substantia nigra pars compacta and pars reticulata. More than 200 million neurons in these regions form parts of multiple distinct and parallel cortical–basal ganglia–thalamic–cortical projection loops. Functionally, the basal ganglia do not only control the selection of intended voluntary movements but also fulfill associative, cognitive, and limbic tasks.
