GLP-1 itself has a very short half-life. Therefore, longer acting GLP-1 receptor agonists like exenatide, liraglutide, exenatide once weekly, and lixisenatide need to be injected subcutaneously at intervals between twice daily and once weekly, or the activity of the proteolytic enzyme dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) needs to be inhibited by DPP-4 inhibitors such as sitagliptin, vildagliptin, saxagliptin, linagliptin, and alogliptin in order to exploit this potential. Incretin-based medications do not provoke hypoglycemia, and either induce some weight loss (incretin mimetics) or are weight-neutral (DPP-4 inhibitors).
