Abstract: Most higher education courses in career management or career planning in the USA concentrate on what has traditionally been considered a “career” (satisfying activity from the first position to retirement). As reflected in textbooks and learning support materials, emphasis has been on the objective of preparing learners for planning and implementing the search for a suitable position, coping with career disruption, working toward employment advancement (professional/vocational development), and planning career moves to satisfy established or changing personal interests and values.
