Abstract: Abstract Psychogenic movement disorders (PMD) are commonly encountered in movement disorder practice and are part of the wider spectrum of “functional” neurological disorders. These disorders raise complex questions regarding aetiology, with some regarding them as fabricated, part of a purely psychiatric disturbance, or misdiagnosed organic illness. Here we detail the positive clinical criteria that separate these disorders from typical organic movement disorders, and show how scientific evidence points to a neurobiological explanation for symptoms. We discuss treatment, demonstrating how recent studies suggest that recovery is possible in many patients.
