Abstract: The gamma distribution is based on gamma function, Γ(a). When the variable a is integer, Γ(a + 1) = a!. Therefore, gamma function may also be called factorial function. A gamma distribution is defined by shape and scale parameters. When the shape parameter is small, the distribution is skewed to the left, while the distribution becomes Dirac's delta function for the infinite value of the shape parameter. In molecular evolutionary studies, this gamma distribution is sometimes used when a certain distribution is empirically known to be quite heterogeneous.
