Abstract: Generative grammar is a term ambiguous between two meanings. Originally, it referred to a specific type of formal grammar with roots in recursive function theory and computer science. Subsequently, generative grammar became a term associated with the mentalist research program into language launched by Noam Chomsky. This article defines the main characteristics of both uses of the term and explains their relationship.
