Abstract: In this chapter, we discuss the appropriate physiology, history, and key features of mechanical and tissue heart valves. A tissue valve is also referred to as a bioprosthesis or bioprosthetic valve. A prosthetic heart valve is a medical device that replaces a diseased native valve, and enables blood flow within the cardiac chambers to be regulated.
