Abstract: The American community college (also known as the junior college, the people’s college, or democracy’s college) is an open-enrollment, regionally accredited institution of higher education that offers terminal vocational programs and college preparatory programs culminating in an associate degree (Cohen and Brawer 2008; Brint and Karabel 1989). A modern American educational innovation, the community college serves as a primary, but often overlooked, gateway to higher education for Americans and students from across the world. In fact, at the time of writing, America’s community college system consists of more than 1,100 institutions that provide educational access to nearly one out of every two undergraduates in the United States (American Association of Community Colleges 2014).
