On average, they addroughly a 10 percent production cost penalty across the five subsectors in thethree African countries.Poor trade logistics also cause long and uncertain delays, which are notacceptable to most global buyers. Good trade logistics connect low-income countries to global output and inputmarkets. Both China and Vietnam have built their export sectors on the back ofvery good trade logistics, but in Africa poor trade logistics increase production costs and lead to long and unreliable deliverytimes, which make it extremely difficult for firms to fill just-in-time orders from global buyers. African governments should (1) harmonize and improve customs operationsby simplifying procedures and leveraging information technology; (2) develop the hard infrastructure (acrossboundaries) to support multimodal systems combining trucking, railways, airways, and shipping to improve connectivity and increase competition; (3) increase competition among freightforwarders, shipping companies, and trucking companies by removing pricecontrols and restrictions on foreign direct investment and on cabotage; and (4) develop strategic partnerships alongkey trade corridors Previous chapterNext chapter FiguresreferencesRecommendeddetails View Published: February 2012ISBN: 978-0-8213-8961-4e-ISBN: 978-0-8213-8974-4 Copyright & Permissions Related RegionsAfricaEast Asia & PacificRelated CountriesChinaTanzaniaVietnamZambiaRelated TopicsIndustryTransport KeywordsTRADE POLICYMANUFACTURING SECTORLOW-INCOME COUNTRIESEXPORTERSJUST-IN-TIME PRINCIPLESCUSTOMS PROCEDURESTRANSPORT NETWORKSTRANSIT CORRIDOR DEVELOPMENTAIRWAYSCONGESTIONDELIVERY TIMESECONOMIES OF SCALEFREIGHTINLAND TRANSPORTJOURNEYLONGER DISTANCESMANUFACTURINGPORTSRAILWAYRAILWAY LINERAILWAYSROADROUTETRADE LOGISTICSTRAFFICTRANSPORT COSTSTRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURETRANSPORTATION PDF DownloadLoading ...
