Historically, this has characterized the commitment to culture and the arts of the United States government. The controversy revealed many inherent ambiguities of principle, purpose, and priority in federal arts policy. It also demonstrated how much the political dynamics and environment of arts policy had changed. By the late 1980's, the world had become fundamentally different from what it had been in the mid-1960's. Cultural policy issues continued to attract public attention. Concern about the content of cultural products was a prominent feature of debates throughout 1993 and into 1994 concerning violence on television and in the movies. The discord and conflict of the late 1980's and early 1990's over cultural issues in general and about arts policy in particular were facilitated and exacerbated by certain myths and misconceptions that reigned among the arts policy community.Read More
