Abstract: This chapter discusses the genius of Elijah ben Solomon, as compared to other Jewish geniuses. It argues that before the geniuses Einstein, Freud, and Marx reigned; it was Elijah's genius that inspired modern European Jews to pursue intellectual achievement as a means to attain an upward social mobility in the eighteenth century. It explains that Elijah of Vilna wrote more diverse works than any other figure in Jewish history, as he made commentaries on almost every major biblical, rabbinic, or kabbalistic text.
