Abstract: Reforestation must be undertaken on a large scale if the adverse effects of deforestation and degradation on biodiversity conservation and ecosystem functioning are to be overcome. But the success of reforestation at a landscape scale depends on how decisions are made. Reforestation by individual farmers may increase the supply of goods and begin to affect erosion and regional hydrological processes. These efforts might also influence the ability of species to move across the landscape. The increased forest cover may even prevent certain species from becoming regionally extinct. However, the effectiveness of any of this reforestation depends on where these reforested areas are located.
