Title: To lift or not to lift 1: the legal requirements for patient lifting
Abstract: Employers have had 4 years to implement the Manual Handling Operations regulations (MHOR) 1992. The MHOR 1992 do not distinguish between the professions and there are no different rules for therapists, nurses or carers. Their impact on nursing and therapeutic handling is widespread. The Royal College of Nursing encourages employers to adopt ‘no lifting’ policies which are feared to have a retrograde effect on the rehabilitation of patients. This paper explains the responsibility of employers and staff in light of the regulations and guidelines. The second article of this pair, to be published in the June issue of BJTR, discusses the implications of the MHOR 1992 and no-lift policies and looks at positive solutions to this problem.
