Title: Episodic and Autobiographical Memory: Function, Dysfunction and Behavioral Evaluation
Abstract: The study of autobiographical memory not only reveals what we remember but also how and why we remember. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the components of autobiographical memory, with a special emphasis on episodic autobiographical memory and the subjective experience of it. At the clinical level, amnesia in Alzheimer's disease and Korsakoff syndrome results in significant difficulty in retrieving episodic autobiographical memories and in mentally re-experiencing them. At the behavioral level, a growing body of research is demonstrating how autobiographical retrieval can shape behavioral responses such as facial expressions and eye movements.
