Abstract: HISTORIQUELa tapisserie est un tissu dont les fils de laine, de soie, d'or ou d'argent sont enroulés sur une chaîne, de manière à faire corps avec elle.Les images font donc partie intégrante du tissu, à l'encontre de la broderie, qui constitue une véritable superposition au tissu préexistant.Si les chaînes sont tendues sur le métier dans le sens vertical, la tapisserie est dite de haute lisse ; si les chaînes sont disposées dans le sens horizontal, elle est appelée de basse lisse.Dans le second cas, le modèle est placé sous la nappe des chaînes, de façon que le tapissier puisse suivre le modèle point par point.Celui-ci est fait en sens inverse, de telle sorte que le tissu, qui en est la contre-partie, donne l'image directe.Pour l'exécution d'une tapisserie de haute lisse, l'artisan se place derrière les chaînes et travaille à l'envers, en consultant le carton qui se trouve placé derrière lui.Le travail terminé, il est impossible de reconnaître, à la seule inspection du tissu, s'il a été exécuté en haute lisse ou en basse lisse, car dans les tapisseries les chaînes courent toujours dans le sens horizontal par rapport au sujet.L'existence de cer- tains cartons dessinés en sens inverse et les données fournies par des documents écrits peuvent seuls nous renseigner à cet égard.Dans un très grand nombre de cas, il est préférable de se borner à l'emploi du mot tapisserie sans ajouter de complément déterminatif.On sait toutefois qu'à la manufacture nationale des Gobelins, les tentures n'ont cessé d'être tissées en haute lisse, tandis que la basse lisse a été très usitée dans les provinces belges, surtout à partir du xvi e siècle.Ce fut le procédé favori de l'industrie audenardaise, et il est encore pratiqué couramment à la manufacture de Beauvais, à Aubusson et dans nombre d'ateliers privés.Il ne sera pas superflu de faire observer que c'est à tort que l'usage tend à s'établir de plus en plus d'employer le mot Gobelins pour désigner n'importe quelle tapisserie.Il est historiquement établi que les plus anciennes tapisseries des Gobelins ne datent que du règne de Henri IV.Cette dénomination est donc erronée pour toutes les productions étrangères à la manufacture parisienne, et elle est d'autant moins acceptable en Belgique, que la tapisserie y fut jadis la plus belle industrie d'art.L'origine de la tapisserie, c'est le cas de le dire, se perd dans la nuit des temps.On sait qu'elle était connue des Égyptiens du nouvel empire et qu'elle fut pratiquée par les Grecs.Sous le rapport de la tech- nique, on peut assimiler aux tapisseries les tissus coptes découverts en si grand nombre en Egypte depuis quelques années.Si on possède des renseignements un peu vagues sur les tentures exécutées dans les premiers siècles du moyen âge, on peut signaler cependant, à Quedlimbourg et à Halberstadt, des tapisseries du xn e et du xm e siècle qui témoignent d'une réelle entente de la technique.Or, sem- blables résultats n'auraient pu être obtenus par une industrie à ses débuts.Sans vouloir assigner une date quelconque à l'apparition de cette industrie en Occident, il est permis de croire que les Croisades n'y furent pas étrangères.En tout cas, il existait des métiers à Paris à la fin du xm e siècle, ainsi qu'en témoignent, à défaut des tentures mêmes, certains documents écrits.Les plus anciennes productions qui nous soient parvenues des tapissiers parisiens sont la suite de YApocalypse (cathédrale d'Angers), exécutée à partir de 1376 par Nicolas Bataille et ses successeurs d'après les cartons de Jean de Bruges, peintre ordi- naire du roi de France Charles V, et la Présentation de Jésus-Christ au temple (pi.1), faisant partie des collections du Cinquantenaire, qui est apparentée à l'oeuvre précédente.Faut-il attribuer à la même époque ces tapisseries d'origine alle- mande, dont nos collections possèdent un spécimen représentant des Episodes empruntés à un roman du moyen âge (pi.2), ou con- vient-il de les retarder jusqu'au xv e siècle ?C'est une question qui n'a pas été définitivement résolue jusqu'à présent, mais si l'on tient compte du fait que les pays germaniques retardent sur la France au point de vue de l'évolution artistique, il y a plutôt lieu de considérer ces tapis- series comme appartenant au début de la seconde période.Au xv e siècle, les ateliers français, quoique fortement atteints par l'invasion anglaise, ne laissent pas de produire un nombre considérable de tentures, dont plusieurs se sont conservées jusqu'à nous.C'est à l'un 42.La Partie de Trie-Trac.
