Abstract: The first major dictionary dealing with the English language in Canada was the Dictionary of Canadianisms on historical principles (1967). This was followed by two important regional dictionaries (Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island). Dictionaries of Canadian French began to appear in the 1980s, culminating in the historical Dictionnaire du français québécois (1998). A major bilingual French–English dictionary is in progress at the University of Ottawa. Lexicographical research into Aboriginal Canadian languages began with missionaries in the 19th century. Under the auspices of the Canadian Museum of Civilization, a number of scholarly dictionaries of such languages have been published.
