Title: Modelling Considerations in the Scaled Boundary Finite Element Analysis
Abstract: The scaled boundary finite element method has several distinctive features in comparison with the popular finite element method. This chapter discusses the modelling considerations pertinent to the scaled boundary finite element method with examples to illustrate its salient features. It numerically investigates the effect of the location of the scaling centre on the accuracy of a scaled boundary finite element analysis. In the scaled boundary finite element method, an S-element may have any number of edges as long as the scaling requirement is satisfied. An edge can also be divided into multiple elements. The S-element provides higher flexibility in mesh transition than a finite element does. The global mesh is obtained by combining the non-match meshes at their interface. The scaled boundary finite element method offers a simple and accurate way to model singularity problems.
