Abstract: Most of what is contained in this chapter is not normally part of philosophy in the way this word is used outside the Soviet Union. There are, however, two good reasons for taking it up here. First, the contemporary Soviet philosophers do hold these subjects to be of philosophical importance. Second, historical materialism contains most of what is left of the thought of Marx in Marxism-Leninism and it is here that one can see the origins of many of the teachings of dialectical materialism.
