Title: Chapter 1 The Geological Framework of Continental Red Beds
Abstract: Publisher SummaryThis chapter presents geological framework of continental red beds. Continental red beds comprise a wide range of sedimentary facies representing the whole spectrum of non-marine depositional environments from alluvial fans, river floodplains, deserts, lakes, and deltas. The chapter describes tectonic framework of sedimentary basins in relation to the geosynclinal and plate tectonic concepts. This is followed by a description of a number of ancient red bed basins that illustrate the characteristic settings in which ancient continental red beds are found. The chapter also presents the palaeoclimatic significance and classification of ancient continental red beds. The more realistic approach to the classification of red beds must take into account all significant characteristics including depositional, textural and mineralogical properties, and diagenetic features. Alluvial red beds comprise a wide range of depositional facies ranging from marginal alluvial fans and coarse-grained braided rivers to alluvial plains with low-sinuosity or meandering rivers. Aeolian sands are widely regarded as one of the most distinctive facies of continental red beds although they are still poorly understood.
